Animal Company

A free multiplayer VR survival game on Meta Quest where you collect loot, evade monsters, and cause chaos with friends across haunted forests, secret labs, icy slopes, and more.

Overview

Animal Company is a free multiplayer VR survival game available on Meta Quest. Originally built as a hackathon prototype inspired by Gorilla Tag and Lethal Company, it launched on Meta App Lab on July 3, 2024.

By March 2025 it had surpassed one million monthly active users, driven largely by creators on YouTube and TikTok. As of early 2026 it remains one of the top five most popular games on the Meta platform.

Gameplay and Core Loop

The core gameplay revolves around collecting loot while evading monsters across themed maps. Each run drops you and your squad into a new environment where you scavenge for valuables, dodge threats, and try to extract alive.

Gadgets, sandbox toys, and craftable items add layers of strategy and improvisation to every session. A deep Tech Tree lets you unlock new abilities and gear as you progress.

Maps and Environments

Animal Company features a growing roster of maps, each controlled by the mysterious Canopy Group. Every map has its own visual identity, soundscape, and gameplay mechanics.

Environments include haunted forests, secret research labs, icy mountain slopes, abandoned mines, low-gravity nuclear zones, lava caves, and more. New maps are added regularly through weekly updates.

Monsters and Threats

Each map has signature monsters with unique behaviours and movement patterns. Notable creatures include Fleshy Armstrong with unpredictable movement, and the Missile Site Monster which lurks underground.

Limited-time modes like Zombie Waves pit players against endless hordes. Learning monster patterns and knowing when to run, hide, or fight is central to surviving deeper into each map.

Crafting and Progression

Loot collected during runs feeds into a crafting and trading system. You can build weapons, vehicles, drones, and robots, then upgrade them through the Tech Tree.

Progression rewards repeated play without gating content behind paywalls. Rare drops from harder maps and seasonal events give collectors long-term goals.

Multiplayer and Social

Animal Company is built around playing with friends. Squads explore maps together, coordinate loot runs, and deal with monster encounters as a group.

The VR format adds a physical layer to interactions, from grabbing items to running from threats. The social chaos is a large part of why the game took off on streaming platforms.

Why Animal Company Stands Out

The VR survival genre is growing fast, but Animal Company carved out its own space by combining loot-and-extract tension with the physical, social chaos that VR multiplayer excels at.

The free-to-play model and weekly content drops attracted millions of players within its first year. For Meta Quest owners looking for a game that is easy to pick up and endlessly replayable with friends, Animal Company is one of the strongest options on the platform.
