ArcheAge is a sandbox MMORPG originally developed by XL Games under the direction of Jake Song, who previously created Lineage. Launched in 2013 in Korea and 2014 globally, it became famous for its open-world sandbox systems including player housing, farming, trading, naval combat, and large-scale castle sieges. The game offered a level of player freedom that few MMOs have matched.
ArcheAge is recognised for pioneering systems that later became standard in sandbox MMOs: player-owned farms and houses in the open world, a trade pack delivery system with real risk, and massive naval battles between player factions on the open sea.
Players can claim land in the open world to build houses and farms, grow crops and livestock, craft trade packs, and deliver them across dangerous trade routes for profit. The ocean is a full gameplay zone where players build ships, engage in naval combat, hunt sea creatures, and search for underwater treasure. Piracy is a legitimate playstyle with its own faction and mechanics.
The class system combines 12 skillsets into any combination of three, creating 220 possible class builds. This "classless" system means players define their own archetype. A Battlerage/Shadowplay/Auramancy build creates a mobile melee assassin, while Sorcery/Witchcraft/Occultism makes a crowd-control mage.
ArcheAge Chronicles is the upcoming successor, slated for Q3 or Q4 2026 from Kakao Games. It redesigns PvP as structured and opt-in through arenas, battlegrounds, and zone events. Housing shifts from territorial control to personal expression and community building. Kakao has confirmed it will avoid pay-to-win monetisation. A global beta test is expected in the first half of 2026.
