Battalion Legacy

Overview

BATTALION: Legacy is the free final version of BULKHEAD’s World War II multiplayer shooter Battalion 1944. It remains downloadable on Steam, but it should not be mistaken for an actively developed live-service FPS. BULKHEAD formally ended support and production when it released the Legacy build in August 2022. The package preserved the core gunplay, added British forces, refreshed the interface, restored a server browser, removed in-game monetization, and made the game free for everyone.

The current game is Windows PC only. Planned PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions never launched, and BULKHEAD’s final announcement said console Kickstarter backers would be refunded. Public matches now depend on people joining available servers, so population varies by region and time. Players can also host dedicated servers using the free SteamCMD server package on Windows or Linux. Legacy is therefore best approached as a preserved community shooter, not a current competitive platform with guaranteed queues, seasons, or future balance patches.

Fast Gunplay Without Modern Hero Systems

BATTALION follows the older arena and military-shooter idea that movement, aim, map knowledge, timing, and weapon control should decide a fight. There are no hero abilities, ultimate attacks, or loadout perks designed to rescue a poor engagement. Sprint routes, peeking, quick aim, recoil control, and understanding common sightlines matter immediately, making the game easy to understand but mechanically unforgiving.

5v5 Search and Destroy

The signature competitive mode is a single-life attack-and-defend format for two teams of five. One side attacks an objective while the other defends, and the first team to eight rounds wins under the official Legacy description. With no respawn during a round, early information, utility, trades, and patient rotations matter as much as the opening shot. A careless push can leave a team outnumbered for the rest of the round.

Rifles Only, Team Deathmatch, and Server Rules

Legacy also supports lower-pressure modes such as Team Deathmatch and Rifles Only, while dedicated-server configuration gives hosts control over maps, modes, nation-specific weapons, passwords, and other rules. The server browser is the practical center of the current game. What is playable on a given day depends on which official-era or community servers remain visible and populated.

Four Forces and More Than 30 Weapons

American, German, Soviet, and British forces bring recognizable period weapons including bolt-action rifles, semi-automatic rifles, submachine guns, sidearms, and shotguns. The final Legacy release specifically added British equipment such as the Lee-Enfield and Webley Revolver. Weapons share the same skill-first philosophy but differ in fire rate, recoil, handling, magazine size, and effective range.

Tips for New Players

PC System Requirements and Server Hosting

Steam still displays the original Windows 7 through Windows 10 wording, but Valve notes that the Steam client supports Windows 10 and later. The client requires a 64-bit operating system and 20 GB of storage. A separate dedicated-server application can be installed anonymously through SteamCMD and hosted on Windows or Linux.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BATTALION: Legacy still playable in 2026?

Yes. The client remains listed as free on Steam and community servers can still be hosted. That does not guarantee a populated public match in every region or time zone, so check the server browser before planning a session.

Is Battalion Legacy shut down?

Not in the same sense as a game whose client and servers were removed. BULKHEAD ended support and production, but left the free Steam client and dedicated-server tools available. It is playable but officially unsupported.

Is Battalion Legacy completely free?

Yes. BULKHEAD’s Steam description says the Legacy version is completely free and has no in-game monetization. The former paid Battalion 1944 product was converted into this final free edition.

Did Battalion Legacy release on PlayStation or Xbox?

No. BULKHEAD explicitly confirmed that Battalion 1944 never made it to console and announced refunds for affected console Kickstarter backers. The current Legacy client is available only for Windows PC through Steam.

Does Battalion Legacy support cross-play?

No. There are no console editions to connect with, and the playable client is Windows PC only. Windows and Linux can both host dedicated servers, but that is server-host support rather than a separate Linux client platform.

Does Battalion Legacy have ranked matchmaking?

The older 2019 version used competitive and FACEIT systems, but the final Legacy announcement centers on a working server browser and private hosting. Players should not expect an actively maintained ranked ladder or guaranteed matchmaking service.

Can Battalion Legacy be played alone or offline?

Steam lists Online PvP as the supported feature and the game has no story campaign. A private or self-hosted server can give a group control over a session, but Legacy should not be purchased or downloaded for a conventional offline campaign.

Can players host their own Battalion Legacy server?

Yes. Patch 1.1 added self-hosted dedicated-server support. BULKHEAD’s pinned guide provides an anonymous SteamCMD installation command and separate executable paths for Windows and Linux hosts.

What modes are included in Battalion Legacy?

The official store highlights 5v5 Search and Destroy, Team Deathmatch, and Rifles Only. Server configuration and the browser can expose additional maps or rules depending on the host, but availability depends on active servers.

Why was Battalion 1944 renamed BATTALION: Legacy?

Legacy is the revisited final build released free on August 16, 2022 after BULKHEAD ended its relationship with Square Enix. It consolidated the shooter into a final package with British forces, additional weapons, a reworked interface, server browsing, and private hosting.
