Escape from Tarkov is a hardcore tactical first-person shooter and survival game developed by Battlestate Games. Set in the fictional Norvinsk region of Russia, the game drops players into raid instances where they must scavenge for loot, engage in realistic gunfights, and extract safely to keep their findings. Losing a raid means losing everything you brought in.
Tarkov launched its 1.0 version in November 2025 after years in beta, establishing itself as the defining game in the extraction shooter genre. Every raid is a self-contained mission. Players choose their loadout, enter one of several large maps, complete tasks, gather valuable loot, and find an extraction point to escape. Death means losing your equipped gear and anything in your backpack. The Scav mode lets players enter raids as AI faction members with random loadouts, providing a risk-free way to earn resources.
Weapon customisation is unmatched in the genre. Hundreds of real-world firearms can be modified with dozens of attachments each, affecting recoil, ergonomics, weight, and accuracy. The health system tracks damage to individual limbs, with bleed effects, fractures, and surgical kits adding medical management to combat.
Patch 1.0.4.0 in Q1 2026 added DLSS 4.5 support and visual improvements including transparent magazines. Patch 1.0.5.0 in Q2 introduces a new boss, the PVE Prestige System, and a new seasonal wipe system for PvP characters. Two new maps are planned: Icebreaker (a cargo ship in a snowy setting) and End of Line (a metro station). A major Halloween event with new story content is scheduled for Q3.
