Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker

The fourth expansion and narrative climax of FFXIV, concluding the Hydaelyn and Zodiark saga with two new jobs, six new zones, the Pandaemonium raid series, and the Island Sanctuary.

Overview

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is the fourth expansion for Final Fantasy XIV Online, released on December 7, 2021 by Square Enix. It serves as the narrative climax of the Hydaelyn and Zodiark story arc, a saga that began with A Realm Reborn in 2013 and built across three subsequent expansions.

Endwalker raises the level cap to 90, introduces two new jobs, adds six major zones, and delivers what is widely considered one of the most ambitious and emotionally resonant storylines in MMO history. The expansion is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox.

Story

Endwalker concludes the overarching conflict between Hydaelyn and Zodiark that has driven the narrative since the game's relaunch. The Warrior of Light travels to Old Sharlayan, the scholarly city-state that has remained neutral throughout the world's conflicts, to uncover a plan to save the star from the Final Days.

The story moves through Thavnair, Garlemald, the underground research facility of Labyrinthos, and eventually to the surface of the moon and beyond. Without spoiling the ending, the final act recontextualises events from every previous expansion and delivers a conclusion the community overwhelmingly praised for its emotional weight and thematic ambition.

New Jobs

Endwalker adds two new jobs. The Sage is a barrier healer that uses floating nouliths to shield allies and deal damage simultaneously through a system called Kardia, which passively heals a linked party member whenever the Sage deals damage.

The Reaper is a melee DPS that wields a scythe and channels a voidsent avatar for burst damage windows. Both jobs start at level 70 and are available immediately upon purchasing the expansion, with no prerequisite quest chain required.

Zones and Exploration

Endwalker introduces six main zones: Labyrinthos, a massive underground biodome beneath Old Sharlayan; Thavnair, a tropical Near Eastern region home to the city of Radz-at-Han; and Garlemald, the ruined capital of the Garlean Empire.

The remaining zones include Mare Lamentorum, the barren surface of the moon; Elpis, a paradise from the ancient past; and Ultima Thule, a realm at the edge of existence. Each zone serves the story directly while also providing side content, FATEs, hunts, and gathering nodes for endgame progression.

Raids and Endgame

The high-end raid series for Endwalker is Pandaemonium, split into three tiers of four fights each (Asphodelos, Abyssos, and Anabaseios), with both Normal and Savage difficulty modes. Savage encounters are the primary source of best-in-slot gear each tier and require coordinated eight-player groups to clear.

The Alliance raid series is Myths of the Realm, a 24-player experience exploring the Twelve, the gods of FFXIV's world. Two Ultimate-difficulty fights were added during the expansion cycle: Dragonsong's Reprise and The Omega Protocol.

Beyond raids, endgame includes Expert Roulette dungeons, Extreme Trials, Treasure Maps, the weekly-capped Tomestone gear system, relic weapon questlines, and the Criterion Dungeon system introduced in patch 6.2.

Island Sanctuary

Patch 6.2 introduced the Island Sanctuary, a solo-friendly side content system where players manage their own private island. You can gather materials, craft structures, tend crops, raise animals, and build workshops that generate passive currency.

The island operates on its own gathering and crafting system separate from the main game, meaning no prior Disciple of the Hand or Land levels are required. It was designed as a relaxing alternative to combat-focused endgame and became one of the most popular additions to the expansion.

Male Viera

Endwalker made the Viera race fully playable for both genders. Male Viera were one of the most requested features from the community and arrived alongside the expansion launch with full customization options, voice sets, and gear compatibility.

What Makes Endwalker Essential

Endwalker is the payoff for one of the longest and most ambitious narrative arcs in gaming. Players who have followed the Warrior of Light from A Realm Reborn through Shadowbringers will find a conclusion that honours every thread the story established over nearly a decade.

Beyond the story, the expansion delivered a complete endgame with some of the best raid encounters in the franchise, introduced two well-designed jobs, and added the Island Sanctuary as a genuinely new type of content for the game. For FFXIV players, Endwalker is not optional. It is the reason the journey exists.
