Guild Wars 2 is a buy-to-play MMORPG developed by ArenaNet, released in 2012. It removed the subscription model that dominated the genre at the time and introduced dynamic event systems, horizontal progression, and a focus on exploration over grinding that continues to define it more than a decade later.
The game is set in Tyria, a high-fantasy world threatened by Elder Dragons. Players choose from five races and nine professions, each with three elite specialisations unlocked through expansions. The latest expansion, Visions of Eternity, launched in October 2025.
Guild Wars 2 replaces traditional quest hubs with dynamic events that scale based on the number of participants. World versus World pits three servers against each other in week-long territorial battles, while structured PvP provides balanced 5v5 matches with equalised gear.
Raids were unified with Strike Missions in the 2026 quarterly updates, and the new Guardian's Glade raid introduced ten-player encounters with challenge mode variants. The Visions of Eternity roadmap includes six new legendary items and two additional maps throughout 2026.
No subscription fee means you can return to the game at any time without paying monthly. Level 80 characters are not left behind by expansions because gear progression is horizontal. Mounts, introduced in the Path of Fire expansion, each have unique movement abilities rather than being simple speed boosts.
Players who enjoy Guild Wars 2's no-subscription model and dynamic event design may also find Guild Wars worth revisiting for its deep dual-class skill system, or Lost Ark for a free-to-play isometric action alternative with challenging raid content.
