Old School RuneScape

Overview

Old School RuneScape is Jagex’s community-led fantasy MMORPG, launched on February 22, 2013 from an August 2007 backup of RuneScape. It preserves the deliberate point-and-click combat, long skill grinds, dangerous Wilderness, and player economy associated with that era while receiving its own quests, regions, bosses, modes, and quality-of-life updates.

This is not a frozen museum server. Old School has grown into a separate version of Gielinor with years of original content and a very large active audience. Jagex’s official site showed more than 128,000 people online during a September 2026 check, though the live total naturally changes throughout each day.

Classless Skills and Account Progression

There are no permanent classes. One character can train gathering skills such as Mining, Fishing, and Woodcutting; production skills such as Smithing, Cooking, and Crafting; utility skills such as Agility and Thieving; and the familiar Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Magic, Prayer, and Hitpoints combat skills.

Most skills progress toward level 99 and reward a skillcape when mastered. The route is open-ended: a player can chase efficient experience rates, complete quests for useful unlocks, build wealth, collect pets, pursue achievement diaries, or specialize in bosses and raids. Progress is slow by modern MMO standards, but nearly every level, item, shortcut, and teleport can remain useful for years.

Quests, Combat, Bosses, and Raids

Combat uses a tick-based system built around equipment switches, protection prayers, positioning, special attacks, and knowledge of encounter timing. Its surface looks simple, but demanding fights ask players to read animations, move precisely, manage supplies, and change weapons or prayers quickly.

Questing is more handcrafted than the repeated task chains common to many MMORPGs. Adventures combine dialogue, puzzles, exploration, boss encounters, and permanent account unlocks. Endgame players can tackle solo bosses or coordinated raids, while mid-level activities provide a gradual path toward more mechanically demanding encounters.

Economy, PvP, and Alternative Modes

The Grand Exchange anchors a large player-driven economy. Resources gathered by skillers, equipment earned from bosses, consumables made by players, and rare cosmetic drops all move through the same market. Membership can also be funded with in-game gold by purchasing tradable Old School Bonds from other players.

PvP is concentrated in dangerous areas and dedicated activities. The Wilderness increases risk because defeat can cost carried items, while competitive modes and seasonal events offer different rules. Ironman accounts remove ordinary player trading and require self-sufficient progression; Hardcore, Ultimate, and Group Ironman variants add stricter limitations or shared-team goals.

Sailing and a Community-Shaped World in 2026

Sailing is now part of the live game, opening the sea as a training and exploration space with player vessels, port tasks, cargo, crew, facilities, sea creatures, and boat combat. Jagex continued polling Sailing adjustments during 2026, including reward changes, cannon behavior, ship repairs, fishing spots, and sail customization.

That process illustrates what makes Old School different. Major proposals are presented to the community and eligible players vote on them before development moves ahead under the current polling charter. The result is a modern live-service MMORPG whose visual language and core timing still feel rooted in 2007.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Old School RuneScape free to play?

Yes. Its permanent free version includes a limited set of areas, quests, skills, equipment, and worlds. Membership unlocks the wider map, member skills, more quests, bosses, raids, and other activities.

Is Old School RuneScape the same as RuneScape?

No. Old School and modern RuneScape are separate games with different combat, content, economies, and character progress. The same eligible membership applies to both versions for that character, but progress does not transfer between them.

Is Sailing available now?

Yes. Sailing is live and Jagex is continuing to adjust its rewards, facilities, combat, training activities, and customization through updates and community polls in 2026.

Can desktop and mobile players play together?

Yes. Old School RuneScape uses the same game worlds and character progression across its supported Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS clients.

Can membership be bought with in-game gold?

Yes. Old School Bonds are tradable through direct trades or the Grand Exchange and can be redeemed for membership. Bond prices in gold are determined by the player market.

Is RuneLite allowed?

Yes, when launched through the Jagex Launcher. Jagex lists RuneLite and HDOS as approved third-party clients, but players should verify the current approved-client list and avoid unofficial downloads.

Can Old School RuneScape be played solo?

Yes. Most skills, quests, and many bosses work well for solo players. Group activities, clans, raids, trading, and competitive play remain available, while Ironman modes formalize self-sufficient progression.

Is Old School RuneScape still popular in 2026?

Yes. The official live counter exceeded 128,000 concurrent players during a September 2026 check, and current polls regularly attract tens of thousands of votes.
