Take the battle to the sky with fantastical flying mount combat unlike anything you've seen before in Riders of Icarus, the new unprecede...
Riders of Icarus is a free-to-play action MMORPG developed by WeMade Entertainment and published by Nexon America. Released in 2016, it built its identity around one distinctive mechanic: taming wild creatures and riding them as mounts, companions, and combat pets across a high-fantasy world.
The game is set in the land of Hakain, a world threatened by demonic forces. Players take on the role of Riders, elite warriors with the innate ability to tame legendary beasts, working to defend the world from the demon king Bharnos.
Taming is the game's defining system. To tame a creature, you must chase it down on foot or mount, leap onto its back, and complete a taming minigame while staying mounted. Larger and rarer creatures require better gear and timing to successfully tame.
Tamed creatures become Familiars, categorised as mounts, pets, or flying mounts. Each Familiar has its own stats, skills, and a seal that allows its powers to be transferred onto equipment. Collecting, levelling, and sealing Familiars is the primary progression system outside of direct character gear.
Combat is action-oriented with manual aiming and skill activation. Players choose from five classes: Berserker, Guardian, Wizard, Ranger, and Priest. Each class has two specialisation paths unlocked later in progression, expanding their skill sets and role options.
Both ground and aerial combat are supported. Flying mounts enable combat at altitude, and certain dungeons and world events require mounted gameplay to navigate or engage enemies effectively.
The active taming mechanic sets Riders of Icarus apart from MMORPGs with passive pet systems. Chasing down a powerful creature, successfully mounting it in the wild, and completing the taming challenge feels earned in a way that clicking a "capture" button does not.
The Familiar seal system also means your collection directly improves your character's power, creating a dual progression loop between gear upgrading and Familiar hunting that keeps both systems relevant throughout the game.
Players drawn to creature-collecting and companion mechanics may also enjoy Aura Kingdom, which features a similar Eidolon companion bonding system.
