Overview

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is the ninth expansion for Blizzard's MMORPG, released in November 2022. It introduced the Dragon Isles, the Dracthyr Evoker race and class, a revolutionary Dragonriding system, and sweeping overhauls to the talent tree and profession systems. It is widely regarded as the best WoW expansion launch since Legion.

Dragonflight marked a deliberate return to Azeroth after the divisive Shadowlands expansion, refocusing on the world players know and the dragons that have shaped its history.

Dragonriding and New Systems

Dragonriding is a momentum-based flight system where players control a customisable dragon mount through physics-based movement. You gain speed by diving and spend it to climb, barrel roll, and surge forward. It is nearly three times faster than traditional flying and was so well-received that it has been expanded to all zones in subsequent patches.

The talent tree was completely rebuilt into a dual-branch system offering meaningful choices between utility and throughput. Professions received a crafting quality system, specialisations, and a work order system where players commission items from skilled crafters.

What Sets It Apart

Dragonflight proved that World of Warcraft could still innovate after nearly two decades. The Dracthyr Evoker brought a genuinely new class fantasy, Dragonriding changed how players think about traversal, and the profession overhaul gave crafting real economic value for the first time in years.
