Destiny

Bungie has emphasized that the universe of Destiny will be "alive". Events may happen in-game that are not necessarily controlled or plan...

Overview

Destiny is a shared-world first-person shooter developed by Bungie and published by Activision, released on September 9, 2014. It marked Bungie's first post-Halo franchise and introduced a new genre blend of FPS mechanics with MMORPG-style character progression, cooperative strikes, competitive PvP, and large-scale cooperative raids in a science fiction universe.

Set in a distant future where humanity's last survivors shelter beneath a giant sphere called the Traveler, players take on the role of Guardians, warriors resurrected by the Traveler's light to fight back against alien threats. The game launched across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

Classes and Combat

Players choose one of three Guardian classes at character creation. Hunters are agile scouts who specialize in precision combat and mobility-focused abilities. Titans are heavy soldiers built around defensive barriers and powerful melee attacks. Warlocks are spellcasters who channel the Traveler's light into powerful area abilities and passive support effects.

Each class has three subclasses tied to elemental damage types: Arc, Solar, and Void. These subclasses determine the character's signature ability, such as the Hunter's Golden Gun, the Titan's Fist of Havoc, or the Warlock's Nova Bomb. Combat takes place in large patrol zones, tightly designed strike missions for three players, and six-player raids.

Activities and Content

Patrol zones on Earth, the Moon, Venus, and Mars allow open-world exploration with public events, bounties, and hidden collectibles. Strikes are co-operative three-player missions culminating in a boss encounter, available in both normal and Nightfall difficulty. The Crucible provides competitive PvP across multiple modes.

Raids are the pinnacle of cooperative content. Vault of Glass on Venus, released at launch, is widely considered one of the best raid encounters ever designed, requiring six coordinated players to solve spatial puzzles and defeat the Vex Gorgon maze and the Templar. The Taken King expansion added the King's Fall raid and transformed the game's quest and reward systems.

Expansions and Legacy

Destiny received four expansions: The Dark Below (December 2014), House of Wolves (May 2015), The Taken King (September 2015), and Rise of Iron (September 2016). The Taken King is widely considered the point at which Destiny reached its full potential, overhauling the quest system, adding a dedicated story campaign, and introducing Exotic weapon quest chains.

Destiny 1 online servers were permanently shut down by Bungie on February 27, 2024. The game is no longer playable online. It stands as a historical title and the foundation for the broader Destiny franchise that continues through Destiny 2.

Legacy and Influence

Despite a rocky launch criticized for thin story content and aggressive DLC pricing, Destiny recovered through its expansions and left a lasting mark on online gaming. It pioneered the looter-shooter genre, proved that FPS games could sustain a long-term loot-driven endgame, and established the raid format as a genre staple requiring genuine coordination rather than individual skill alone.

The Taken King expansion (2015) is widely regarded as the high point of Destiny 1, resolving the story criticism and overhauling progression in ways that informed the design of Destiny 2 and many games that followed.
