Elsword is a free-to-play 2.5D action MMORPG developed by KOG Studios and published by various partners including Nexon and Kakao Games by region. Originally launched in South Korea in 2007 and reaching international markets between 2010 and 2012, Elsword has maintained a dedicated global community for over a decade through consistent character additions and story updates.
The game follows Elsword and a growing cast of friends on a quest to recover stolen El Shards, crystals that power the world, from the demon lord Scar and other antagonists across an ongoing story that has grown significantly since launch.
Elsword uses side-scrolling action combat on a 2.5D plane, blending beat-'em-up style melee with platformer movement. Attacks are executed through keyboard combinations of direction inputs and skill keys, similar to fighting game notation: a Z attack while moving forward produces a different hit than a stationary Z attack, for example.
Aerial combat, wall jumps, and launching enemies into the air for juggle combos are core mechanical elements. Mastering a character's combo routes is central to performing well in both dungeons and PvP.
Elsword features over a dozen playable characters, each with a completely distinct moveset, personality, and story arc. Characters include the sword-wielding Elsword, the archer Rena, the dark knight Raven, the time-manipulating Ain, and others.
Each character has three separate job advancement paths that branch at level 15, 35, and again at level 99 into a final Transcendence form. The paths take the same base character in dramatically different directions. Elsword can become a tanky sword lord, a magical knight, or a runic combatant depending on the chosen path.
Fans of Elsword's 2.5D combo-driven action may also enjoy Dragon Nest for its similarly fast-paced instanced dungeon gameplay.
