Final Fantasy XIV Online

Final Fantasy XIV is Square Enix's story-driven subscription MMORPG. Its no-time-limit trial now reaches Shadowbringers and level 80, and the current Dawntrail service is available on PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Overview

Final Fantasy XIV Online is a subscription-based MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix. Originally launched in 2010 to poor reception, it was completely rebuilt and relaunched in 2013 as A Realm Reborn. That relaunch is widely regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in gaming history, and the game has since grown into one of the most popular MMORPGs in the world.

The free trial has no play-time limit and now covers A Realm Reborn plus Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers through level 80. Ultimate raids, the market board, retainers, and several social features remain restricted on trial accounts.

Gameplay and Class System

FFXIV is structured around a Main Scenario Quest that drives the narrative forward through each expansion. The story is fully voiced during key scenes and is consistently praised as one of the best in the MMO genre. A single character can switch between all combat classes and crafting disciplines simply by changing weapons.

Combat uses a global cooldown system with off-global abilities woven between casts. Dungeons are designed for four players, trials pit eight players against a single boss, and full raids support eight or twenty-four players with escalating mechanical complexity.

Current State in 2026

Dawntrail remains the current expansion. Patch 7.55 released on July 28, 2026 with the Occult Crescent: North Horn, the conclusion of the Phantom Weapons series, further Hildibrand quests, and Allied Society capstone quests. Patch 7.56 is the next announced update and is scheduled to continue the main scenario and add the Beastmaster limited job.

Final Fantasy XIV launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026, joining Windows, macOS, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. All versions connect to the same service, but platform licences and subscription arrangements still apply.

Tips for New Players

• Follow the Main Scenario Quest. It unlocks almost all content in the game and is required to progress.
• Try different classes on the same character. You can be a tank, healer, and damage dealer without making alts.
• Join a Free Company early for social interaction, buffs, and help with dungeons.
• Do not skip cutscenes on your first playthrough. The story starts slow but builds into something exceptional by Heavensward.
• Take advantage of the free trial. There is no rush to subscribe until you have exhausted the trial content.
