Final Fantasy XIV Online is a subscription-based MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix. Originally launched in 2010 to poor reception, it was completely rebuilt and relaunched in 2013 as A Realm Reborn. That relaunch is widely regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in gaming history, and the game has since grown into one of the most popular MMORPGs in the world.
The game offers an enormous free trial that includes the entire base game and the first expansion, Heavensward, with no time limit. This means hundreds of hours of story content, dungeons, raids, and side activities are available before spending a single cent.
FFXIV is structured around a Main Scenario Quest that drives the narrative forward through each expansion. The story is fully voiced during key scenes and is consistently praised as one of the best in the MMO genre. A single character can switch between all combat classes and crafting disciplines simply by changing weapons.
Combat uses a global cooldown system with off-global abilities woven between casts. Dungeons are designed for four players, trials pit eight players against a single boss, and full raids support eight or twenty-four players with escalating mechanical complexity.
The current expansion, Dawntrail, launched in 2024 and continues to receive major updates. Patch 7.5 "Trail to the Heavens" arrives on April 28, 2026 with new story quests, a new dungeon, a new trial against Enuo, the Windurst chapter of the Echoes of Vana'diel crossover, and the Beastmaster limited job.
Fan Fest events in Anaheim, Berlin, and Tokyo are expected to reveal the next expansion, tentatively targeting early-to-mid 2027.
