Overview

Stormblood is the second major expansion for Final Fantasy XIV Online, released in June 2017. It takes players beyond the borders of Eorzea to the occupied nations of Ala Mhigo and Doma, where the story centres on liberation from the Garlean Empire. It raised the level cap to 70 and introduced sweeping changes to the battle system.

The expansion is included with any purchase of the latest expansion and is also playable through the free trial up to the end of patch 3.56 content. Its narrative bridges the more intimate Heavensward storyline with the broader geopolitical conflicts that define later expansions.

New Jobs and Battle System

Stormblood introduced two new DPS jobs: Samurai, a melee class built around precise combo execution and burst damage, and Red Mage, a hybrid caster that weaves ranged magic with melee combos. Both jobs start at level 50 and do not require completing any specific prerequisite quests beyond reaching that level.

The expansion overhauled the battle system with the Job Gauge, giving every class a visual indicator for their core mechanics. The cross-class skill system was replaced with a streamlined Role Action system, reducing complexity while maintaining class identity.

Exploration and Content

Stormblood introduced swimming and diving as exploration mechanics, opening underwater areas in the Ruby Sea and other zones. The expansion spans six new zones across two continents, each with distinct cultural identities drawn from East Asian and Middle Eastern influences.

Post-launch patches added the Return to Ivalice 24-player alliance raid series, the Forbidden Land of Eureka open-world content, and the Omega raid series. These updates sustained the expansion for two years until the launch of Shadowbringers.
