Genshin Impact

An open-world action RPG set in the vast world of Teyvat, where you explore seven distinct nations, master an elemental combat system, collect characters, and uncover a story that spans gods, civilizations, and cosmic secrets.

Overview

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world action RPG developed and published by HoYoverse (formerly miHoYo). Released on September 28, 2020, it quickly became one of the most successful games in the world with over 60 million active players.

The game is set in Teyvat, a fantasy continent divided into seven nations, each governed by an elemental Archon (god). You play as the Traveler, a dimension-hopping wanderer searching for a lost sibling while being drawn into conflicts that span divine politics, ancient civilizations, and cosmic threats.

Genshin Impact is available on PC, PlayStation 5, iOS, and Android with full cross-play and cross-save support.

Elemental Combat System

Combat revolves around seven elements: Pyro (fire), Hydro (water), Electro (lightning), Cryo (ice), Anemo (wind), Geo (earth), and Dendro (nature). Every playable character is attuned to one element and has a unique set of abilities.

The core of the system is Elemental Reactions, which trigger when two different elements are applied to the same target. Applying Hydro then Cryo freezes enemies in place. Pyro followed by Electro triggers Overloaded, an AoE explosion. Dendro combined with Electro creates Quicken, which increases subsequent Electro and Dendro damage.

Building a team of four characters whose elements react well together is the foundation of both combat strategy and character investment.

Regions of Teyvat

Teyvat currently features six fully explorable regions, each with its own culture, architecture, soundtrack, and Archon Quest storyline:

The seventh and final nation, Snezhnaya, home of the Cryo Archon and the Fatui antagonist faction, has not yet been released.

Characters and Gacha

Genshin Impact features a large and growing roster of playable characters, each with a unique weapon type (Sword, Claymore, Polearm, Bow, or Catalyst), element, and gameplay kit.

New characters are obtained primarily through a gacha (wish) system using in-game currency earned through exploration, quests, and events, or purchased with real money. The pity system guarantees a 5-star character within 90 wishes on the limited banner, with a 50/50 chance of it being the featured character.

Losing the 50/50 guarantees the featured character on your next 5-star pull. All permanent content can be completed with free characters.

Exploration and Open World

Exploration is one of Genshin Impact's strongest pillars. Every region is dense with puzzles, hidden chests, world quests, collectibles, and environmental storytelling. Climbing, gliding, and swimming let you traverse almost any surface in the world.

Each region introduces unique traversal mechanics: Inazuma has Electrogranum for lightning travel, Sumeru has Dendrograna and Four-Leaf Sigils for canopy swinging, Fontaine has underwater diving, and Natlan features Saurian Indwelling, which lets you inhabit the bodies of native creatures to fly, burrow, or scale lava.

Endgame and Progression

Character progression involves levelling, ascending with regional materials, and upgrading talents. Artifact farming at Adventure Rank 45+ becomes the primary endgame activity, with randomised stat rolls determining how much damage your characters deal.

The Spiral Abyss is the main repeatable combat challenge, resetting every two weeks with 12 floors of increasingly difficult enemy encounters that test team building and mechanical execution. Beyond Abyss, HoYoverse runs a continuous cycle of limited-time events every patch (roughly six weeks) that provide Primogems, materials, and unique gameplay modes.

Story and Updates

Genshin Impact follows a version update schedule with major patches every six weeks. Each patch typically includes new story quests, character banners, events, quality-of-life improvements, and occasionally new map areas.

The Archon Quest main storyline progresses through each nation, while character Story Quests and Hangout Events provide deeper personal narratives. World Quests are self-contained stories tied to specific locations and often rival the main storyline in writing quality.

Why Genshin Impact Matters

Genshin Impact redefined expectations for free-to-play games when it launched. The production quality of its open world, soundtrack, voice acting, and combat system rivals full-price AAA titles.

HoYoverse has maintained that standard across five years of continuous updates. Every region release is essentially a new game's worth of exploration content delivered for free. The gacha model is polarising, but the game never requires spending money to experience its story or complete its content. Players who enjoy HoYoverse's style may also want to try Honkai: Star Rail, the studio's turn-based sci-fi RPG, or Tower of Fantasy for a more MMO-focused open-world alternative with shared exploration.
