Mortal Online

Experience true open-world freedom in Mortal Online - a unique first-person, medieval fantasy, massively multiplayer online role-playing ...

Overview

Mortal Online is a first-person open-world MMORPG developed by the Swedish indie studio Star Vault AB. It launched in June 2010 with a design philosophy centred on uncompromising player freedom: full-loot PvP, a classless skill-based character system, real-time stamina-driven combat, and a world with no hand-holding or instanced protection zones.

The game built a dedicated but niche community around its brutal mechanics. Star Vault released Mortal Online 2 in January 2022, which is now the actively developed version. The original Mortal Online servers remain technically operational as of 2026, though the active population has declined significantly since MO2 launched.

Combat and Survival

Combat in Mortal Online is entirely first-person with manual aiming and a stamina system that governs every swing and block. There is no auto-attack and no target-locking.

Hitting an opponent requires actual aim, and managing stamina during a fight is as important as landing blows. Running low on stamina mid-fight leaves you unable to swing or block effectively, turning momentum shifts into critical moments.

The full-loot system means every item in your inventory drops on death and can be looted by whoever killed you. This includes crafted gear, resources, and currency. Death carries real consequences, shaping how players approach travel, exploration, and any PvP encounter.

Classless Character Building

Mortal Online has no predefined classes. Characters are built entirely through skills chosen and trained over time. A player can combine combat skills, crafting skills, and magic skills in any proportion, creating a build tailored to their preferred playstyle.

This freedom comes with depth and complexity. Skill caps limit how many areas a single character can master, so specialisation is generally more effective than spreading points too broadly. New players benefit strongly from researching skill builds before committing.

Crafting and Economy

Crafting is one of the most developed systems in the game. Players extract raw materials from the environment, process them, and craft weapons, armour, tools, and consumables. The quality and properties of crafted items depend on the specific materials used, which creates a meaningful player-driven economy.

Certain crafting paths require deep skill investment and regional material knowledge. Skilled crafters are valued community members even in a game primarily known for its combat.

PvP and the Flag System

The entire world is PvP-enabled with no safe zones outside of guarded towns. Players are assigned flags based on their behaviour. Killing innocent players repeatedly escalates your status to criminal or murderer, making you a target for guards and bounty hunters.

Guild warfare and territorial control add a strategic layer to PvP. Organised guilds compete over key areas, trade routes, and resources in ongoing open-world conflict with no instanced boundaries.

Current Status in 2026

The original Mortal Online (MO1) servers remain online as of 2026, but the active player population is very low, estimated at under 50 concurrent players on average. Most of the original community migrated to Mortal Online 2, which launched in January 2022 and is the version receiving active development, content updates, and a new continent expansion in 2026.

Players new to the Mortal Online experience should start with Mortal Online 2, which carries forward all the core design principles with improved graphics, performance, and ongoing support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the original Mortal Online still playable?

Yes, servers remain online as of 2026, but the active population is very low. Most players have moved to Mortal Online 2, which launched in January 2022 and is receiving active development.

How does Mortal Online differ from Mortal Online 2?

Mortal Online 2 is a full sequel with rebuilt graphics, improved performance, and active content updates. MO1 is in maintenance mode with a minimal player base. Both share the same core design: full-loot, classless, first-person, skill-based combat.

Is Mortal Online free to play?

The base game is free to play, but a monthly subscription is required to unlock the full skill cap. Without a subscription, characters are capped at 60 skills, which limits long-term progression.
