Path of Exile 2 is a dark action RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games. It entered early access in December 2024 as a standalone sequel to the original Path of Exile, featuring an entirely new campaign, six character classes, and a reworked skill system built on 25 years of ARPG design experience.
The game is set in the world of Wraeclast, years after the events of the first game. A new threat has emerged and players must fight through a multi-act campaign filled with challenging bosses, randomised dungeons, and deep character customisation.
Combat is visceral and dodge-roll focused, a significant departure from the original's more stationary playstyle. Each of the six classes can equip skill gems that slot directly into gear, and a massive passive skill tree lets you craft builds ranging from lightning-fast melee assassins to summoners commanding armies of undead.
Patch 0.4.0, "The Last of the Druids", launched in December 2025 and introduced the Druid class with shapeshifting abilities, over 30 new support gems, and more than 250 new passive skills. Patch 0.5.0 is expected in May 2026 with major endgame overhauls.
Path of Exile 2 stands apart from its competition by offering genuine depth without a pay-to-win model. All microtransactions are cosmetic. The skill gem and passive tree systems allow virtually unlimited build diversity, rewarding theory-crafting and experimentation.
Grinding Gear Games has announced ExileCon 2026 for November in New Zealand, widely expected to reveal the 1.0 full release. The studio's track record of transparent communication and aggressive content updates has built one of the most loyal ARPG communities in gaming.
Players interested in the ARPG genre may also explore Path of Exile for the original deeper endgame experience, or Last Epoch for a more beginner-friendly take on deep build crafting.
