Originally launched in Japan in May 2012 and released globally on PC and Xbox One in 2020, PSO2 is set aboard the Oracle colony fleet — a massive civilisation of starships home to the ARKS military organisation, whose operatives explore and defend newly discovered planets from hostile lifeforms.

In 2026, PSO2 Classic remains fully accessible alongside PSO2: New Genesis through a shared launcher. Both titles share the same character and account, but are separate experiences with different mechanics, content, and settings. The Classic client preserves all six episodes of story content, 13 unique classes, and its original instanced dungeon structure.

PSO2 Classic vs New Genesis

Understanding the difference between PSO2 Classic and New Genesis is important before starting. PSO2 Classic (this page) uses a fully instanced structure — all missions take place in private lobbies with up to 12 players, with no persistent open world. New Genesis replaced the open-world exploration framework in 2021 and set the story 1,000 years after Classic's events on a new planet called Halpha.

PSO2 Classic is now in maintenance mode — no new content updates are added, but every episode and all 13 classes remain playable. If you want the original deep class system, ARKS story, and instanced mission structure, PSO2 Classic is the game to start with. If you want ongoing live content, seasonal events, and open-world exploration, New Genesis is the active version.

Classes

PSO2 Classic has 13 playable classes divided into standard and scion (successor) types. Standard classes can set any other standard class as a sub-class, borrowing a portion of its passive skills and some active abilities:

• Hunter — Melee fighter using swords, partisan, and wired lance. High HP, great for beginners.
• Fighter — High-damage close range DPS using double sabers, knuckles, and twin daggers.
• Ranger — Mid-range attacker with rifles and grenade launchers. Strong sustained output.
• Gunner — Twin machine gun specialist with extremely mobile aerial combat.
• Force — Elemental technique (magic) caster with wide area coverage.
• Techer — Support and technique hybrid with healing and status abilities.
• Braver — Hybrid class using katana (melee) or bullet bow (ranged) depending on situation.
• Bouncer — Uses Jet Boots and Dual Blades with elemental technique integration.
• Summoner — Deploys pets into combat managed through a nurture-and-battle system.
• Hero, Phantom, Etoile, Luster — Four scion classes with no sub-class requirement, each with a unique multi-weapon playstyle unlocked after reaching level 75 in two standard classes.

Races

PSO2 Classic has four playable races with minor stat differences:

• Human — Balanced stats with a bonus to PP recovery. The safest all-rounder choice.
• Newman — Higher technique power and PP pool. Favoured by Force and Techer players.
• CAST — Highest attack and defence stats. Lower PP regen, suited for ranged and melee builds that rely less on techniques.
• Dewman — Unique race with heightened critical hit rate and damage. Best suited for aggressive DPS classes.

Stat differences between races in PSO2 Classic are intentionally small, so race choice is largely aesthetic. All races support all classes.

Combat and Photon Arts

PSO2 Classic's combat is real-time and action-oriented. Characters have a Photon Point (PP) gauge that fuels Photon Arts — the game's equivalent of skills or special moves. Each weapon type has its own set of Photon Arts assigned to the attack buttons. The Step (dodge) and Guard (block, class-dependent) systems allow active defensive play during combat.

Emergency Codes trigger during missions — sudden PvE challenge events like "Eliminate all enemies in 60 seconds" or "Protect the CAST transport" — that reward bonus drops for completion. Multi-Party Area (MPA) quests can have up to 12 players in a shared zone, with large-scale boss encounters called Dark Falz or Urgent Quests that the whole ship server participates in simultaneously.

Story: The Six Episodes

PSO2 Classic tells its story across six numbered Episodes, each playable in full:

• Episode 1 — Introduction to the ARKS on planet Naberius, establishing the threat of the Falspawn and the mystery of the Oracle fleet's history.
• Episode 2 — Expands to new planets and introduces the Deuman race origin storyline.
• Episode 3 — The Oracle fleet faces an unprecedented threat; introduces Earth as a setting.
• Episode 4 — Story shifts significantly to Earth and present-day Tokyo, blending sci-fi and contemporary settings.
• Episode 5 — Returns to the oracle fleet and escalates the Photoner civilisation arc.
• Episode 6 — The concluding chapter of PSO2 Classic's main story, leading into the events of New Genesis.

Business Model

PSO2 Classic is free to play. The cash shop uses Arks Cash (AC) purchased with real money and Star Gems (SG) earnable through gameplay. AC is used for cosmetic items, scratch tickets (gacha fashion draws), and an optional Premium Membership that provides additional storage space, a personal shop licence, and other quality-of-life benefits. Premium Membership is optional and does not gate story or gameplay content.
