Silkroad Online

Silkroad Online is a free MMORPG made by Joymax that is based on the silkroad trading routes in ancient China.

Overview

Silkroad Online is a free-to-play MMORPG developed by Joymax and originally released in South Korea in 2005, reaching international markets in 2006. Set along the historical Silk Road trading routes connecting China, the Islamic empire, and Europe, it blends fantasy RPG elements with a unique merchant economy and player-driven trading system.

One of the defining features of Silkroad Online is its three-faction system dividing players between Hunter, Trader, and Thief roles that interact with each other in the open world, creating dynamic conflict tied to the game's economy.

The Silk Road Trading System

Players can choose the Trader profession and transport goods between cities along caravan routes for profit. These routes are contested by Thief-role players who ambush caravans to steal goods. Hunter-role players escort caravans and defend them from Thief attacks.

This player-driven conflict around the trade economy creates organic open-world PvP scenarios tied to real economic stakes. Successful trades generate significant in-game profit, making the risk meaningful and the Hunter versus Thief conflict more than cosmetic.

Civilization System and Classes

At character creation, players choose between three civilisations: Chinese, European, and Islamic. Each has distinct weapon types, skill trees, and a different progression arc through the game's regions.

Chinese characters use the Blade, Sword, Bow, and Nuke (magic) weapon paths. European characters use Knight, Warlock, Wizard, and Rogue paths. Islamic characters, added later, introduced a different set of skill combinations. Hybrid builds mixing weapon types are possible within each civilisation's framework.

Bot Culture and Community

Silkroad Online is historically notable for its bot culture. Third-party automation programs became widespread and Joymax eventually introduced an anti-bot system called JOYSHIELD, but bots remained a persistent part of the game's ecosystem. This is important context for players new to the game's community dynamics.

Players who enjoy Silkroad Online's old-school MMORPG design and trading economy may also find Ragnarok Online or Lineage II rewarding for a similar era of online RPG.
