Aion

Aion is NCSOFT's free PC MMORPG set on the shattered world of Atreia, where Elyos and Asmodians wage aerial PvPvE faction warfare against each other and the dragon Balaur. Aion Classic is the active version in 2026, with Aion 2 launching globally later this year.

Overview

Aion is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG developed and published by NCSOFT. It launched in Korea in November 2008 and reached Western markets in 2009. The game is set on Atreia, a world split in two after the catastrophic destruction of the Tower of Eternity, which divided the planet and its people into two opposing factions. Aion Classic, published in Europe by Gameforge, is the primary active version for Western players in 2026 and continues to receive major content updates.

Aion is defined by three interlocking systems: true aerial flight and combat in designated zones, a three-way PvPvE conflict between the Elyos, Asmodians, and the NPC Balaur dragon race, and an Abyss territory system where faction performance directly shapes the rewards and power available to all players on a server. Its elaborate character customisation and polished visual style remain standout qualities despite the game's age.

The World of Atreia and the Two Factions

Atreia was once a unified world until the Tower of Eternity was destroyed in a cataclysm called the Cataclysm, splitting the planet into two half-worlds. The survivors on either half evolved in isolation under completely different conditions. Those living in the sunlit half became the Elyos, an angelic-looking people who believe Aion, the divine source of the world, favours them with light and restoration. Those exiled to the dark, harsh half became the Asmodians, who adapted with pale skin and eyes suited to darkness, developing a philosophy of self-reliance and strength forged through hardship.

Both factions share the same eight classes, but their visual aesthetics, starting zones, and lore perspectives are entirely distinct. Elyos wings appear white and radiant; Asmodian wings are darker and more feathered. The faction you choose determines your starting continent, your storyline, and which players you will be fighting against in the Abyss for the rest of the game. The choice is permanent for each character.

Flight and Aerial Combat

Flight in Aion is powered by Aether energy, giving each character a base flight duration of approximately one minute that can be extended through equipment, titles, and consumable items. Flight unlocks progressively: gliding is available from the start, and full flight in the open world opens up around level 10. The Abyss, the primary PvPvE zone, allows unrestricted flight throughout its entirety.

Aerial combat functions like ground combat with additional positioning considerations. Players can initiate fights mid-flight, chain skills while airborne, and use wing-removal abilities to strip an enemy's flight capability, sending them falling. The Abyss hosts dogfight-style PvP skirmishes between individual players, small groups, and large-scale faction raids all sharing the same airspace simultaneously.

Some zones restrict full flight while still permitting gliding, and certain areas require specific flight items or portals to access. Managing flight duration in contested Abyss territory is one of the tactical skills that separates experienced players from new ones.

Classes

Aion has eight playable classes available to both Elyos and Asmodians. Gladiator is a frontline melee warrior with crowd control and life-steal tools. Templar is the dedicated tank built around damage mitigation and aggro control. Assassin is a stealth melee damage dealer relying on burst damage and positional play. Ranger handles ranged physical damage with bows and traps. Sorcerer deals elemental magic damage at range. Spiritmaster summons and commands elemental spirits for damage and debuffs. Cleric is the primary healer with strong support tools. Chanter is a hybrid melee-support class that buffs allies while dealing respectable damage.

Aion Classic EU's Update 4.5 Ignite also introduced a ninth option: the Phoenix class, a fast-paced mid-range magical damage dealer using Flame Revolvers and Flame Leather armour. Its Overcharge Energy mechanic builds stacks on every critical hit and triggers a heightened burst state when fully charged. New characters in Classic now start directly as their chosen advanced class, removing the legacy base class levelling step that previously slowed new player onboarding.

The Abyss and PvPvE System

The Abyss is Aion's signature PvPvE zone, a shared contested region between Elysea and Asmodae where Elyos, Asmodians, and Balaur NPCs all operate simultaneously. Players earn Abyss Points by defeating enemy players, killing Balaur enemies, and completing objectives. Defeating a higher-ranked player earns more points; losing to a lower-ranked player costs more. Points are also lost on death.

Abyss Points feed into a ranking ladder with 18 ranks, from Soldier Rank 9 at the bottom to Army Governor at the top. Higher ranks unlock access to Abyss gear vendors who sell powerful equipment not available through other content. This creates a direct link between PvP performance and gear progression, making Abyss participation a necessity for competitive endgame players rather than optional content.

The Dredgion is an instanced six-versus-six PvPvE battleground where a team of Elyos and a team of Asmodians both board the same Balaur cruiser and compete to earn the most points by killing enemies and completing objectives before the other faction. It is one of the most popular ways to earn Abyss Points in a structured environment outside the open Abyss.

Aion Classic EU: Update 4.5 Ignite (2026)

Update 4.5 Ignite is the major content release for Aion Classic EU in 2026, bringing the level cap to 75 and adding the Teva zone as the new progression area. Teva is described as a surreal refuge forged by Tiamat from fragments of Atreia preserved in her memory. It functions as a Level 65 to 75 adventuring zone with rotating anomalies, field missions, rare monster encounters, and weekly-reset Arcanium currency rewards. Players can run Teva solo or in a two-player group, with deaths penalising Arcanium accumulation during active field missions.

The update also introduced Legion content in Teva through the Gold Tree system, where guilds capture the Gold Tree Chieftain to earn rewards from multiple Gold Trees in the area. PvPvE pressure persists throughout the zone, meaning players farming monsters can be interrupted by opposing faction players at any time. Access to Teva is through Teleport Shugos on the Somnium ship for Elyos and the Nornir for Asmodians.

Aion 2: Global Launch in 2026

NCSOFT confirmed in April 2026 that Aion 2 will launch globally later in 2026 on PC via Steam and the PURPLE launcher, with dedicated servers for North America, South America, Europe, and Japan. The game will support ten languages at launch including English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and both Chinese scripts.

Aion 2 launched in Korea and Taiwan on November 19, 2025, and entered its Season 2 content cycle on January 21, 2026. The sequel is built on Unreal Engine 5 with a world map 36 times larger than the original Aion at 1,200 square kilometres, seamless aerial combat, and raids supporting up to 200 players simultaneously. The Stigma system allows each class to equip four of twelve available special abilities, letting players with the same class build fundamentally different PvE and PvP specialisations. A major class balance overhaul was released in March 2026 alongside new Stigma skills across all eight classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aion free to play?

Yes. Aion Classic is free to download and play on PC. The game generates revenue through cosmetic purchases and an optional subscription that provides quality-of-life bonuses. Core content including all classes, zones, and the Abyss PvPvE system is accessible without spending. Aion 2 is also expected to launch as a free-to-play title when it arrives globally later in 2026.

What is the difference between Aion Classic and the original Aion?

Aion Classic recreates the earlier versions of the game with a progression pace and content scope closer to the original 2008 to 2012 era, rather than the heavily updated retail version that accumulated years of changes. Classic continues to receive new updates, as demonstrated by Update 4.5 Ignite in 2026 which raised the level cap to 75 and added the Teva zone and Phoenix class. The original retail Aion is no longer actively updated in Western markets.

What makes the Abyss different from normal PvP zones?

The Abyss is a three-way contested zone where Elyos, Asmodians, and Balaur NPCs all coexist simultaneously. Dying there costs Abyss Points, and the points earned directly determine a player's rank on the faction ladder. Higher ranks unlock exclusive vendor gear. This links PvP performance to gear progression in a way that most MMO PvP zones do not, making Abyss participation meaningful for competitive players rather than purely optional.

When is Aion 2 coming to global servers?

NCSOFT confirmed in April 2026 that Aion 2 will launch globally later in 2026 on PC via Steam and the PURPLE launcher, with dedicated regional servers for North America, South America, Europe, and Japan. The game is already live in Korea and Taiwan since November 2025. A May 2026 developer showcase was scheduled to reveal the revamped class system and seasonal content roadmap ahead of global launch.

How does the flight system work in Aion?

Flight runs on an Aether energy timer, starting at approximately one minute and extendable through gear and items. Full flight unlocks in the open world at level 10. The Abyss allows unrestricted flight throughout. In aerial combat, players can use wing-removal skills to strip an enemy's ability to fly, causing them to fall. Gliding is available even in restricted zones where full powered flight is blocked.
