New World: Aeternum

New World: Aeternum is Amazon Games' cross-platform relaunch of New World, available on PC, Xbox, and PS5 with cross-play. Season 10 (October 2025) was the final content update — the game is scheduled to go offline January 31, 2027.

Overview

New World: Aeternum is the cross-platform relaunch of Amazon Games' open-world MMORPG, released in October 2024 for PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 with full cross-play support. It bundles the original New World with the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion and introduced a rebuilt console experience, mounts, swimming, and a revised main story playable entirely solo.

Important: Amazon has confirmed that New World: Aeternum will be taken offline on January 31, 2027. Season 10 — the Nighthaven update released in October 2025 — was the final content update. The game is currently in maintenance mode with no further expansions planned. Players interested in experiencing the game have until that date.

What Changed in the Aeternum Relaunch

The October 2024 relaunch was a substantial rework rather than a simple port. The most significant additions were mounts, which fundamentally changed travel across Aeternum's large open world, and swimming, which opened up coastline areas that were previously impassable. The main story was restructured to work as a solo experience from start to finish, removing the dependency on groups that made earlier New World difficult for players who wanted to follow the narrative.

Console players got a fully rebuilt controller layout with a lock-on targeting system and streamlined menus. Cross-play between PC, Xbox, and PS5 is enabled by default, pooling the playerbase across all three platforms.

Combat

New World: Aeternum uses real-time action combat with no tab-targeting. Every weapon type has its own skill tree and passive mastery track. You equip two weapons simultaneously and can switch between them mid-fight, allowing hybrid builds that combine, for example, a sword and shield for blocking with a bow for ranged follow-up.

There are no fixed classes. Your playstyle is defined entirely by your weapon choices and attribute allocation — Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Focus, and Constitution each govern which weapons and armour types you scale into. Respeccing is available but costs in-game gold, so early investment decisions have some weight.

Open World and Exploration

Aeternum is a single large island divided into distinct biomes with their own monster types, resource nodes, and faction-held outposts. The world has no instanced zones for overworld content — all exploration, gathering, and PvP flagging happen on the shared map. Outpost Rush and other instanced modes are the exception.

Corruption rifts appear across the map as dynamic events where groups of players can push back waves of enemies for rewards. These remain the best way to encounter other players organically while levelling.

Crafting and Economy

Crafting is one of the game's deepest systems. Every resource category — logging, mining, harvesting, fishing, skinning — has its own gathering skill that levels independently. Refining raw materials into workable components is a separate skill tier, and crafting finished items is another. Players who invest heavily into a specific tradeskill can produce gear that competes with dungeon drops at endgame.

The trading post connects all settlements on the island, allowing players to list and purchase items server-wide. A gold cap increase introduced in the final updates raised the inventory gold limit to 10 million, removing a long-standing friction point for high-volume traders.

PvP

Open-world PvP is opt-in via a flagging system. Flagged players can attack other flagged players anywhere on the map and gain a bonus to XP and gold at the cost of full loot on death. Most players do not flag outside of specific PvP zones.

War is the large-scale structured PvP mode where companies (guilds) compete to own territory across Aeternum's map. Owning territory generates income for the company and grants bonuses to company members. Wars are scheduled 50v50 siege battles. With the population declining in the game's final months, war scheduling has become irregular on lower-population servers.

Outpost Rush is the most reliably populated PvP mode — a 20v20 instanced battle over resource capture points with PvE objectives mixed in.

Playing Before the Shutdown

For players who want to experience New World before the servers close in January 2027, the most content-complete path is the main story campaign (1–65) followed by the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion zones. The expansion is included at no extra cost for all current owners. Amazon has enabled a permanent double XP bonus across all progression tracks to help players advance faster during the game's final months.

Players looking for an actively supported open-world MMORPG alternative should consider The Elder Scrolls Online, which offers a comparable solo-friendly campaign experience with ongoing expansions, or Throne and Liberty for structured territory warfare on a similar scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is New World: Aeternum shutting down?

Yes. Amazon confirmed the game will go offline on all platforms on January 31, 2027. No further content updates are planned beyond the Season 10 Nighthaven update released in October 2025.

Is New World: Aeternum free to play?

No. The game costs $39.99 on console and $59.99 on PC via Steam. The Rise of the Angry Earth expansion is included at no additional cost for all owners.

Does it support cross-play?

Yes. PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 players all share the same servers and can play together with full cross-play enabled by default.

Is there still a playerbase in 2026?

The active playerbase has declined significantly following the shutdown announcement. High-population servers still have enough players for group content and Outpost Rush, but lower-population servers may struggle with war scheduling and group dungeon queues.

What was the final content update?

Season 10: The Nighthaven update, released in October 2025, was the last major content patch. Amazon subsequently announced that no further content would be developed before the January 2027 shutdown.
