Camelot Unchained

A tri-realm RvR MMORPG and spiritual successor to Dark Age of Camelot. After over a decade in development, Camelot Unchained enters Early Access with deep realm-versus-realm combat at its core.

Overview

Camelot Unchained is a buy-to-play Realm-vs-Realm MMORPG developed by City State Entertainment, founded by Mark Jacobs, who previously led the creation of Dark Age of Camelot. After more than a decade in development, Camelot Unchained entered Early Access on March 27, 2026, initially exclusive to existing backers, with the store reopening to new players shortly after launch.

The game's entire design philosophy centers on one thing: Realm-vs-Realm combat. There is no PvE endgame treadmill, no instanced raids that pull focus from the open world. Every system, from crafting to character progression, feeds back into the ongoing three-way conflict between the game's realms. It is a PvP MMORPG built specifically for players who want meaningful, large-scale competitive play.

Three Realms

Players align with one of three realms at character creation, a permanent choice on each server that shapes every aspect of your experience. Realms do not share classes or races, and no class is mirrored across factions, meaning each realm plays and feels distinctly different:

Characters cannot transfer between realms on a live server. Your realm is your identity, and the social bonds you form within it are a core part of the experience.

Archetypes and Classes

Camelot Unchained launches with six archetypes and eighteen classes distributed across all three realms, with six unique classes per realm. No class is repeated or mirrored, so each realm's version of a role has entirely different abilities and playstyle. The six archetypes in Early Access are:

The archetype roster continues to expand during Early Access. A new archetype addition was noted in the Spring 2026 roadmap, with the Scout archetype receiving further development through June.

RvR Combat

Camelot Unchained launches with more than 60 square kilometers of handcrafted maps built specifically for realm-versus-realm conflict. Combat hotspots, capture objectives, and Royal Quests give players structured goals within the open-world RvR framework. Royal Quests reward players for contributing to their realm's objectives, tying individual performance to realm-wide progress.

400+ playable abilities are distributed across the six archetypes and eighteen classes, giving players a wide toolkit for both individual skirmishes and large-scale organized warfare. Guilds coordinate larger operations, and the persistent world ensures that victories and losses carry forward rather than resetting after each session.

Crafting System

The crafting system operates across three tiers and feeds directly into the war effort, making crafters essential to a realm's long-term success:

Future updates plan to add cooking, alchemy, and enchanting to the crafting pipeline. The player economy is supported by trading and banking systems available at launch.

Early Access Status

Early Access opened March 27, 2026, with Weekend Sessions giving backers access from Friday evening through Monday afternoon. The store is reopening to allow new players to purchase access. Two purchase tiers are planned: a Base Edition and a War Unending Edition that includes all current and future Early Access content through the full release. The Early Access period is earmarked to run through end of 2026, though City State Entertainment has stated development will continue until the game is ready.

Camelot Unchained is also establishing a Steam Early Access page for broader distribution, with the Steam version operating on the same Weekend Session schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Camelot Unchained free to play?

No. Camelot Unchained is a buy-to-play game. Two purchase tiers are planned for Early Access: a Base Edition and a War Unending Edition. There is no subscription fee, but the game requires an upfront purchase. Pricing details are available on the official site and the Steam Early Access page.

How is Camelot Unchained related to Dark Age of Camelot?

Camelot Unchained is a spiritual successor to Dark Age of Camelot, sharing the same core designer, Mark Jacobs. Both games focus on three-realm RvR combat as the primary endgame, though Camelot Unchained is an entirely new engine and codebase. It does not share lore or game data with the original, but is designed to capture the same competitive multi-realm PvP philosophy.

Can I switch realms after choosing one?

No. Realm choice is permanent on each server. Once you create a character on a server, that character is locked to their realm. The game has no realm-transfer system by design, as realm loyalty and community identity are central to the RvR structure.

Is there PvE content in Camelot Unchained?

Camelot Unchained is designed primarily as a PvP and RvR MMORPG. The crafting system, Royal Quests, and some environmental mechanics provide non-PvP activities, but there is no traditional PvE raid endgame. Players who prefer PvE-focused MMORPGs will find this game heavily weighted toward competitive realm conflict.

When will Camelot Unchained fully launch?

The Early Access period is planned to run through end of 2026, but City State Entertainment has stated the game will reach full launch when development milestones are met. More archetypes, classes, zones, siege combat, and character progression systems are planned for addition throughout Early Access. Check the new MMO 2026 list for updates.
