Best Indie MMOs 2026: Small Studios, Big Worlds
Every game on this list is made by an independent studio or a solo developer, not a major publisher. Several are built by just one person.
Indie MMOs take risks bigger studios avoid: full-loot sandboxes, permadeath, games you can host yourself, and worlds with no quest markers. All 19 picks have live official servers and have been updated in 2026.

Top Indie Picks Explained
1. Mortal Online 2
Star Vault's first-person sandbox has no classes and full-loot PvP. Nearly every weapon and piece of armor is crafted by players. The Sarducaa continent launched on July 1, 2026 on a new North American server, and only new characters can go there, which gives everyone a fair start.
In September, Star Vault announced an "Era of Refinement" with patches at least once a month. The next update makes almost every creature in Sarducaa mountable.
2. Tibia
CipSoft has run Tibia since 1997, which makes it one of the oldest MMORPGs still online. Its 2D world, unforgiving deaths and lack of a level cap still draw a dedicated community.
The July 13, 2026 Summer Update added the hardest bosses in the game's history, with difficulty you can raise indefinitely for better loot. It also brought new Moonsilver weapons and Tibia's first practice mode.
3. Brighter Shores
Brighter Shores comes from Andrew Gower, co-creator of RuneScape, and his studio Fen Research. It's a point-and-click RPG split into episodes, each with its own professions to train.
2026 has been about reworking progression. Project Milestone split every profession into distinct milestones in January, and a full combat overhaul is planned next.
4. Stars Reach
Stars Reach is led by Raph Koster, designer of Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies. Players can reshape planets, and the economy and social systems are driven by players rather than scripted quests.
Paid Early Access opened on Steam on August 18, 2026. Playable Worlds plans a free-to-play full launch later.
5. Legends of Aria Eternal
Legends of Aria returned on September 10, 2026 as a $20 continuation from Emergent Worlds, the new company of the original game's lead developer. It keeps the classless, skill-based design and full-loot PvP.
It is the first version that lets every owner host their own server with the included launcher. The official Verdant Sky server is still in beta and has one final wipe before its full launch.
Made by One Person
Five games on this list are built and run by a single developer. They're small, but each one has an idea you won't find in bigger MMOs.
- IdleOn: an idle MMO where your characters keep leveling while you're away, from solo developer LavaFlame2.
- Scapewatch: Idle MMO: a RuneScape-inspired idle MMO with 30 skills that train on the server while you're offline. It launched on September 25, 2026.
- Velmora Online: a free 3D tribute to Argentum Online from Argentina, in Early Access since September 18, 2026.
- Faehnor Online: a French-language MMORPG with no minimap, where you find your way with paper maps.
- Pixadom: a cozy social pixel-art MMO you play in your browser, with weekly updates.
What Changed in September 2026
- This is a new list. It launches with 19 indie MMOs, all confirmed to have live official servers in 2026.
- OrbusVR was left out because its servers have shut down.
- Corepunk wiped all progress in its June "Great Reset" and added its first 12-player raid. Artificial Core is aiming for a 1.0 release by the end of 2026.
How We Pick Indie MMOs
A game qualifies if it's made by an independent studio or solo developer, with no major publisher owning it. It also needs live official servers and at least one meaningful update in 2026.
We then rank by community rating, how active the developer is, and how much the game offers that you can't find elsewhere. Private servers and emulators never count.
