This ranking covers 35 MMORPGs you can play today. Each one has live servers, a working account system and a developer still shipping updates in 2026. Classics sit next to this year's launches, so you can compare them on equal terms.

Ragnarok: The New World enters at #1 after its July launch. Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft follow, both coming off big 2026 updates. Guild Wars 2 and Genshin Impact round out the top five as the strongest options that cost nothing to start.

1. Ragnarok: The New World

Gravity launched its first open-world Ragnarok MMORPG in Southeast Asia on July 16, 2026. The free Steam version followed on July 26, and progress is shared between PC and mobile through one Gravity account.

It keeps the series' job classes and card-collecting while adding a seamless 3D world, costume customization and a marriage system. Check your region first: wider availability outside Southeast Asia is still rolling out.

2. Final Fantasy XIV Online

Patch 7.56 arrived on September 8, 2026. It closes the Dawntrail story and adds Beastmaster, a limited job that fights with an axe and shield and can befriend 50 beasts. The next expansion, Evercold, is due in January 2027.

The free trial now covers everything through Shadowbringers and level 80, with no time limit. That makes FFXIV the easiest subscription MMORPG to try before you pay.

3. World of Warcraft

Midnight launched in March 2026 with a level-90 campaign and player housing, a feature players had requested for years. Retail now has 13 classes and 40 specializations.

One subscription also covers several WoW Classic rulesets. If you prefer the slower original game, you can play it without buying anything extra.

4. Guild Wars 2

Code of Creation went live on September 15, 2026 as the final quarterly update for the Visions of Eternity expansion. It adds a six-chapter story finale, the Leyspring Hollows map, a new raid, a new fractal and new legendaries.

The core game is free and has no subscription. Gear stops scaling at max level, so players who take long breaks can come back without falling behind.

5. Genshin Impact

Version 7.0 opened Snezhnaya on August 12, 2026, adding five new areas, story quests and new exploration systems. Genshin is free on PC, iOS, Android, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

It is closer to an online action RPG than a traditional MMORPG. Most content is solo, and co-op is limited to four players. Characters come from a gacha system, so decide on a spending limit early.

• Final Fantasy XIV patch 7.56 (September 8) and Guild Wars 2's Code of Creation (September 15) both closed out their current expansions.
• Amazon Games announced it will stop publishing Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty in the West. Smilegate takes over Lost Ark in early 2027 and NC takes over Throne and Liberty by the end of Q4 2026. Characters and items carry over.
• ArcheAge was removed from this ranking. Its North American and European servers closed in June 2024.
• Aion 2 launches globally on PC on October 5. It will be considered for this list once it has a few months of live service.

Games are ranked on four things: community rating, the size of the active playerbase, how often the developer ships meaningful updates, and how much there is to do at max level.

A game must have live official servers to appear. Private servers and emulators are never included. New launches are added once they have enough live history to judge fairly, which is why a game can appear on New MMORPGs 2026 before it shows up here.

The list is reviewed at the end of every month. Games in maintenance mode, or with no new content for over a year, move down or drop off.
