How We Rank the Best MMORPGs
This list ranks the best MMORPGs available in 2026 by community rating, active playerbase size, ongoing developer support, and depth of endgame content. Games that have shut down or gone into maintenance mode are excluded regardless of historical reputation.
Final Fantasy XIV leads the ranking for the third consecutive year — its post-Shadowbringers momentum and regular expansion cycle have kept it the most-reviewed MMORPG on the site. World of Warcraft holds its position with the Classic Era and Retail tracks running in parallel, while Lost Ark remains the highest-rated action MMORPG by combat depth and endgame raid design.
This July 2026 update keeps the list at 20 games. Notable 2026 launches now live or arriving soon: Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad launched July 10 on PC, PS5, and Xbox as a buy-to-play action RPG set in Aincrad, and EverQuest Legends arrives July 28 with 560 multiclass combinations and full solo play. September brings the global PC launch of Aion 2 from NCSoft with free-to-play access and 200 dungeons across four types. These titles join the New MMORPGs 2026 list and will be evaluated for this ranking once their playerbases and review scores stabilise.
